I just love a summertime wedding! The heat & humidity, when I'm loading equipment in & out of venues... not quite so much. The beautiful St Mary's College in Durham, steeped in all of Durham University's heritage & very much a big part of the University community, was the venue for Mr & Mrs Miles' wedding in late July 2019.
I met with the very friendly porters & MC on my arrival just as the very grand dining hall was starting to be turned around for the evening celebrations. The resident band, the rather excellent Basement Jazz were to play a couple of sets. Space was ample but not unending, so I kindly offered the band the opportunity to plug into my PA system so we wouldn't clutter the stage with speakers. I even jumped in to help out with a couple of technical gremlins the band had early on in their first set. How many wedding DJs would do this? I don't know, but I do. I always do anything I can to help things run as smoothly as possible for my customers - there's no excuse for letting egos getting in the way of a great party!
Ah, what a great party it turned out to be right from the very start. From the bride & groom's first dance & throughout the band's sets the dancefloor was busy except for when the awesome hog roast was being served. Oh & the fun games a guest had sprung on the newlyweds - one currently very popular here - the Mr & Mrs game where everyone discovers how well (or not) the bride & groom know one another. The other was one I'd not seen before involving first aid - all great fun & I assisted by lending a wireless microphone to the quizmistress.
The assembled crowd was internationally flavoured & we had a significant contingent from Germany who'd requested some recent pop tunes from there - no David Hasselhoff at all, much to my relief! I was a sweaty wreck by the time I unloaded all my gear & got it in the back of my van. Tired & perspiring rather a lot, but very very happy of a job well done. It was immense fun being Mr & Mrs Miles' wedding DJ at such an incredible venue - if you're getting married in Durham & plan to celebrate at St Mary's College why not enquire about me being your DJ there too?
